Ikoyi Club Ladies’ Golf Tournament Celebrates Golf, Culture, Unity
The 49th Ikoyi Club 1938 Ladies’ Open Golf Tournament is set to celebrate Africa’s golf talent and Nigerian culture as it brings together players from Nigeria, Zambia, Uganda, and the United States in Lagos from November 13–15, 2024. The event, sanctioned by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, will host 120 amateur lady golfers, 17 professional lady golfers, and 100 male golfers under the theme “A Taste of Nigeria.”
Lady Captain Fatumata Coker highlights the tournament as not only a showcase of golf but a cultural experience that promotes Nigerian tourism through food, clothing, and entertainment. The competition will introduce inclusivity and charity programs, with Nigerian lady professionals competing for the first two days, and international guests experiencing Nigerian music, cuisine, and attire throughout the event.
The tournament includes strokeplay for golfers with handicaps 0-28 and Stableford for handicaps 29-36, ensuring accessible play formats for all levels. Co-Chairman Mrs. Nkoli Moka emphasized the theme “Global Harmony Through Recreation,” noting that golf brings camaraderie and therapeutic benefits, making it more than just a game. Competition Secretary Pat Ozoemene added that the tournament aims to enhance Nigeria’s golfing reputation, offering diverse categories to bring out the best in each player.
Prize highlights include a business class ticket to the USA from Delta Airlines, a Moroccan experience in Marrakech, and a stay at Lakowe Golf and Country Estate. The tournament also supports local caddies through training and scholarships, while Nigerian lady professionals compete for a free round-trip ticket to the USA.
The event will kick off with a cultural cocktail evening on November 12, featuring exhibitions of Nigerian fabrics, crafts, and art from various regions, immersing participants in Nigeria’s rich heritage.
