India’s Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, is expected to visit Washington soon for trade talks, in a move aimed at improving relations between the two countries.

The visit comes as New Delhi and Washington work to strengthen economic cooperation despite recent trade differences.

India and the United States have held what New Delhi described as “positive” and “forward-looking” trade discussions, raising hopes for progress after U.S. President Donald Trump recently increased tariffs on imports from the South Asian nation.

President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke by phone on Tuesday.

Trump doubled tariffs on Indian imports to as much as 50% on August 27th over its purchases of Russian oil, part of Washington’s efforts to step up pressure on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
