INEC urges political parties to adhere to Covid-19 protocols

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has called on political parties in Anambra State to bear in mind that the country is still within the web of a global health emergency as they begin campaign for the November 6th Governorship election.

The INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mr Festus Okoye stated this in Awka while addressing some stakeholders on the commencement of political campaigns in the state from the 8th of August 2021.

Mr Festus Okoye said ”political parties and candidates are required to strictly adhere to the Covid-19 protocol as directed by the Presidential Steering Committee on Covid-19.”

He noted that the use of facemasks, observance of hand hygiene and the restriction of any enclosed venues to 50% of its installed capacity while observing the two metres distance are mandatory.

The INEC Commissioner said ”political parties must also be guided by the INEC policy on the conduct of political events and the code of conduct for voters and political parties within the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Mr okoye called on political parties to conduct their campaigns with civility noting that political campaigns or slogans shall not be tainted with abusive language.

The INEC National Commissioner said that political parties should also know that places designated for religious workshop, police stations, and public offices shall not be used for political campaigns, rallies and processions.

He reiterated that the Commission was committed to the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections and deepening the use of technology in election.

The campaign for the governorship election is expected to end on the 4th of November in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended which stipulates the exercise to end after Ninety days and twenty four hours before polling day.
