Insecurity: Niger State Governor supports establishment of State Police

The Governor of Niger State in North central Nigeria, Abubakar Sani Bello has advocated the need for the establishment of state police in the country.

The Governor who made the suggestion during a  courtesy visit paid by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), led by its Chairman David Kolade Alabi at Minna the state capital on Monday,  said the establishment of the State Police will compliment the activities of the Federal Police.

“Time has come for State Police to be established especially as the Federal Police are being faced with inadequate manpower and other logistical challenges.

“I strongly believe  state policing is necessary because we have to take the security down to the lowest level as the Federal Police can not do it all” Governor Sani Bello said.

The Governor emphasized that the establishment of State Police would create employment at the grass root thereby guaranteeing more security presence in almost all parts of the state.

The Governor who further said he did not expect the establishment of the state police to be complicated, also suggested creating similar establishments in the local Government sector across the country.

“We must break the responsibility from Federal-to-States, and from states-to-local governments. Local governments should have their police so that, at all levels, there are some measure of control and in any case, it shouldn’t be complicated” Governor Bello said.

The State Governor challenged the leadership of ALGON to ensure that all LGAs chairmen provide good leadership because of their proximity to the people.
