IWD 2025: NUJ FCT Council Celebrates Women’s Achievements
As the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has joined the global movement in celebrating women’s resilience, achievements and contributions across various sectors.
With this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” the NUJ FCT Council emphasised the strides made in gender equality while calling for sustained efforts to break barriers and create more opportunities for women.
Women in journalism, governance, and other fields have continued to challenge limitations, proving that leadership is driven by competence and vision rather than gender.
The Council highlighted the increasing representation of women in decision-making roles and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for female professionals.
A historic example of this progress is the recent election of Grace Ike as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, an achievement that comes after 41 years. Her victory is seen as a significant milestone for women in journalism and leadership.
Reflecting on her election and the broader significance of IWD, Ike urged women to support one another beyond mere symbolism.

She criticised the tendency of some women to align with male-dominated political structures at the expense of their fellow women, citing her own election experience as an example.
“Women play a key role in elections, not only as voters but also as leaders, candidates, and agents of change. However, when women betray their own for personal gain, it weakens the solidarity needed for true progress,” Ike stated.
Calling for a collective reassessment of priorities, Ike urged women to unite and work towards dismantling the barriers that have historically hindered their advancement. She also appealed to the federal government, stakeholders, and well-meaning Nigerians to invest in initiatives that promote women’s rights and leadership opportunities.
“The barriers of the past no longer define us,” she declared. “This milestone is not just mine; it belongs to every woman who dares to challenge the norm.”
The NUJ FCT Council reiterated its commitment to gender inclusivity, urging stakeholders to continue supporting and empowering women across all sectors.
The Council emphasised that as more women take up leadership positions, their impact is increasingly visible in journalism, governance, and beyond; shaping policies, narratives, and societal progress.
On this International Women’s Day, the NUJ FCT Council stands in solidarity with women worldwide, celebrating their achievements and advocating for a future where leadership is defined by ability, not gender.
