The Jigawa State Government has taken a major step towards boosting Nigeria’s aviation and export logistics sector with plans to transform Dutse International Airport into a fully operational cargo hub.

Governor Umar Namadi announced that the state has secured approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to commence installation of cargo facilities at the airport.

The development is expected to strengthen agro-export activities across northern Nigeria and enhance the country’s air freight capacity.

The governor made the disclosure during a routine inspection and calibration exercise at the airport conducted by a technical team from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

Global Aviation Standards

Speaking during the visit, Governor Namadi stressed the importance of maintaining global aviation standards as part of the broader strategy to position the airport as a key cargo gateway.

Today is an important day for us in our efforts to ensure that all airport facilities in Jigawa State operate in accordance with best practices,” he said.

He commended airport authorities for prioritising safety and compliance through regular calibration of navigational equipment, noting that adherence to international standards remains central to the airport’s expansion drive.

Responding to questions from journalists, the governor confirmed that discussions with FAAN had culminated in formal approval to begin installing cargo-handling infrastructure ahead of the airport’s full cargo operations.

We have been in discussions with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and they have already granted us approval to begin installing cargo facilities at the airport, in preparation for the full launch of the cargo airport,” he stated.

Governor Namadi expressed confidence that Dutse Airport would soon rank among Nigeria’s leading aviation facilities, pledging continued investment to ensure all operational requirements meet regulatory benchmarks.

The NAMA team leader, Mr Jim Hassan, explained that the agency’s visit was to assess navigational aids and ensure compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

He said the team conducted ground checks and would proceed with performance assessments of equipment to certify optimal and safe operations.

Non-Oil Exports

The cargo hub initiative aligns with ongoing national efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy by strengthening non-oil exports, particularly agricultural produce from the North-West and neighbouring regions.

With FAAN’s approval secured and regulatory assessments underway, Dutse International Airport is poised to play a more strategic role in Nigeria’s aviation and trade network.

Details of the engagement were contained in a press statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Gimel.
