The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has called for autonomy of the agency.
He says the government should stop funding the capital and overhead of the examination body.
Professor Oloyede made the remark when he appeared before the house of Representatives committee on finance in continuation of the 2023-2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework session at the National Assembly.
The Registrar explained that the government should only be paying staff salaries to grant the examination body full autonomy.
He also urged the National Assembly to stop using the successes of JAMB in remittances as a yardstick to measure the performance of other examination bodies in the country.
According to the JAMB registrar, examination bodies are not revenue generating agencies but social service providers.
The deputy chairman of the committee, Mr. Sa’idu Abdullahi, urged government agencies to emulate JAMB in the areas of transparency and accountability.
