Junior Open Golf champion targets Tiger Woods’ feat

Destiny Oyero, a five-time winner of the Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf championship, says his ultimate ambition is to pattern his playing style after American golf sensation, Tiger Woods, and also match his achievements.

Oyero, winner of the 10th Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf championship, which ended Oct. 1 at Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos, said this while speaking to newsmen.

Oyero, a Senior Secondary School 1 student of The Ivy College, Lagos, said he idolised Woods, and would like pattern his game him.

“I watch Tiger Woods a lot and how he plays, I would like to be another Woods in Africa, I have been told that it is possible given my age.

“I participated in the Africa Golf championship where team Nigeria came second and I am also looking forward to the next edition.

“I also participated in the last National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, but it was not a nice experience as those I competed against were way older than me; but I have to play my own game.

“One day I hope to play in the golf tour to finally achieve my dream of becoming a professional golfer,” he said.

The 15-year-old Oyero, a silver medallist at the 2022 African Junior Championship, said he had a lot of time ahead to prepare to become a star attraction in golf.

“I am happy to have won this championship for the record fifth time in my category. I think for now I don’t have a serious challenger.

“I practice a lot because my dad used to encourage me mainly because he is a golfer and wants the best for us in the sport.

“My training regime is a bit strict but enjoyable, and now, I enjoy being on the field playing with my siblings who are also golfers.

“Golfing has exposed me to a lot of things and I have visited some places. I have also had the opportunity of travelling out of the country,” he said.
