In a dedicated move to enhance the state’s revenue generation and tackle the challenges of illegal mining, the Kaduna State House of Assembly has passed a bill establishing the Kaduna State Mining Development Company.
The bill, which is titled “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Kaduna State Mining Development Company, 2025,” was approved during a plenary session led by the Kaduna State House of Assembly’s Speaker, Rt Hon. Yusuf Liman.
During the session, Speaker Liman underscored the Kaduna State House of Assembly’s dedication to sustainable socio-economic growth, stressing the need for effective management of the state’s abundant natural resources.
“This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring that Kaduna State fully capitalises on its solid mineral deposits while safeguarding our environment and communities,” he noted.
Hon. Danlami Usman, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, presented the bill’s report. He highlighted the legislation’s dual objectives of maximizing economic benefits from mining activities and curbing illegal mining practices.
“The new company will act as a revenue-generating platform while establishing a standing committee dedicated to identifying and prosecuting violators of mining regulations,” according to him.
However, the committee will be tasked with providing strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing transparency and governance within the state’s mining sector.
Local communities, which will have official representation on the standing committee, will play a vital role in addressing their concerns and grievances, ensuring that the benefits of mining activities extend to them.
In addition to the Mining Bill, the Kaduna State House of Assembly also introduced and passed a first reading of another bill: “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment of the Kaduna State Tertiary Institution Regulatory Agency and for Other Related Matters, 2025”. This bill seeks to strengthen oversight, coordination, and quality assurance across the state’s tertiary institutions.
Additionally, a motion was introduced regarding the regulation of metal waste vendors in Kaduna State. This initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability, safeguard public health, and enforce compliance with established waste management standards.
The passage of these bills reflects the Kaduna State Assembly’s proactive approach to addressing pressing issues related to resource management and environmental conservation, promising a more sustainable and economically robust future for the region.
