The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to press freedom and the welfare of journalists, in line with global democratic values that recognise media independence as essential to good governance.

Represented by his Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, during a media engagement organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano, the Governor said his administration remains one of the most media-friendly in the country.

Bature dismissed reports of alleged harassment of journalists in the state as politically motivated, noting that Governor Yusuf’s leadership is rooted in transparency, openness, and respect for constitutional rights.

“At no time has this administration used law enforcement or the judiciary to intimidate any journalist. Our government believes that a free press strengthens democracy and accountability,” he said.

Bature highlighted that the Governor’s open-door policy encourages constructive criticism and professional dialogue with the media, stressing that such engagements have contributed to better governance in the state.

Recognising Governor Yusuf’s commitment to press freedom, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) awarded him the national title of “Journalist-Friendly Governor” in June 2025, while former NUJ President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, personally decorated him as the Grand Patron of the NUJ Kano Chapter.

Bature also disclosed that “the Kano State Government is working with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and international development partners to support journalists through training and capacity-building initiatives designed to enhance professionalism and digital literacy.”

He called on journalists to continue adhering to the ethics of their profession and to see government as a partner in promoting public interest and sustainable development.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale, commended Bature for engaging with journalists.

He noted that the session provided a platform for collaboration between media professionals and policymakers in strengthening press freedom and information access in Nigeria.
