The Kano State Government has applauded journalists across Nigeria for their commitment to responsible and ethical reporting, noting that the state has continued to enjoy the positive impact of balanced journalism that highlights governance issues with fairness and objectivity.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave the commendation at the media retreat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, held in Kaduna.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, said the media’s extensive coverage of developmental projects in Kano despite a tense political climate demonstrates the press’s dedication to its constitutional duty as the watchdog of society.

He attributed the healthy relationship between the government and the media to the administration’s policy of openness, regular access to information, and mutual respect for journalistic responsibilities.

Deepening national conversations

The governor hailed the Chapel for hosting its first retreat outside Kano, describing it as a milestone toward strengthening professional capacity and deepening national conversations around journalism practice.

This year’s retreat, themed “Emerging Trends in Journalism: Impacts of AI, News Sources, and Digitally Driven Newsrooms in Modern Journalism; Tasks Ahead of Journalists,” brought together experts who discussed mental health challenges facing journalists, legal considerations in media reporting, and strategies for building trust between the press and public institutions.

Governor Yusuf described the retreat as timely, noting that the Nigerian media landscape is undergoing rapid transformation driven by artificial intelligence, digital disruption, and changing audience behaviour.

He stressed the need for journalists nationwide to continually upskill in response to these developments.

He reaffirmed that the Kano State Government remains committed to transparency, accountability, and open communication with the media, explaining that an informed citizenry is essential to effective governance.

Welfare of Journalists

As part of its support to journalists, the governor announced the approval of a seed fund for the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel Cooperative Society.

He assured that the government would continue to prioritise the welfare of journalists and create an environment that enables them to work productively.

Governor Yusuf congratulated the Chapel’s leadership for its vision and dedication to professional development, wishing participants a successful and impactful retreat before formally declaring it open.
