The governments of Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina States have thrown their weight behind key constitutional amendments, including the creation of additional states, the establishment of state police, and the autonomy of local governments.
Their positions were made known during the North West Zonal Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, organised by the Nigerian Senate in Kano.
Speaking on behalf of the Kano State Government, the Chief of Staff to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Dr. Wali Sani, emphasised the need for true federalism anchored on justice, equity, and transparency.
He argued that, creating additional states would not only promote inclusive governance but also drive socio-economic development and help close existing infrastructure gaps.
Echoing similar sentiments, the Deputy Governor of Jigawa State, Mr. Aminu Usman, and Senator Ibrahim Idah, who represented Katsina State, also stressed that state creation is essential for balanced national growth.
State Police
On the issue of state policing, the three states jointly advocated for its establishment, citing the rising wave of criminal activities in rural and urban communities.
They maintained that a state-controlled police force would complement existing federal security agencies and improve grassroots security through enhanced community policing.
Local Government Autonomy
The three states further expressed their support for full autonomy to be granted to local governments in Nigeria.
They noted that financial and administrative independence at the grassroots level is critical for effective service delivery and sustainable development.
Strengthen Traditional Institutions
In a joint submission, Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina States also endorsed the proposed establishment of a National Council for Traditional Institutions.
They described traditional rulers as vital custodians of cultural values and peace mediators, capable of supporting conflict resolution and promoting social harmony.
Receiving the memoranda from the stakeholders, Chairman of the North West Senate Constitution Review Committee and Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, promised that all submitted proposals would be carefully reviewed.
He pledged that, recommendations deemed viable for constitutional amendments would be duly processed.
