Kano Marks 100 Years of Aviation in Nigeria

Kano, the ancient city, once again took to the skies in celebration of 100 years of aviation.

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, led the nation in celebrating 100 years of aviation in Kano, marking a century since the first aircraft landed in the city in 1925.

The ceremony took place at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.

Represented by Regional Manager Musa Okikiri, Kuku described the occasion as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s aviation journey and a symbol of resilience, innovation, and national progress.

She recalled that on November 1, 1925, the skies of Kano witnessed the arrival of the first aircraft, an event that ushered in a new era of transportation, trade, and connectivity that would later shape the city’s destiny for generations.

Kuku noted that Kano’s long-standing history as a hub of commerce and culture made it the ideal location for aviation’s early development in Nigeria.

She described the 1925 landing as not just a flight, but the dawn of modernity and a testament to human ingenuity.

The Director of Studies, Nigerian Aviation, Tayo Ajuri, who also served as the celebrations program director, highlighted the profound significance of the first landing in 1925, noting that it ignited Kano’s aviation role and achieved remarkable successes over the past 100 years.

He described the anniversary as a celebration of success, connectivity, and modernization, emphasizing that Kano has thrived as an aviation hub and remains a vital commercial center attracting international airlines and investors.

The centenary celebration featured goodwill messages, exhibitions, and cultural displays, underscoring Kano’s enduring role as a gateway between Nigeria and the world.
