The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has reinstated Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, four years after his dethronement.

With the full support of the kingmakers, I have approved the reappointment of Mallam Sanusi Lamido,” the Governor stated  at the Art Chamber of the Kano State Government House on Thursday.

He announced the decision right after signing the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law.

The new law replaces the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019, and dissolves the emirate councils created by Governor Yusuf’s predecessor Abdullahi Ganduje.

“I want to inform the good people of Kano that today, we reappointed Sanusi Lamido Aminu Sanusi popularly known as Muhammadu Sanusi the II as the 16th Emir of Kano while the five former emirs are expected to vacate the palaces within 48 hours”

The law was used by Ganduje to split the Kano Emirate into five in December 2019 and depose the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on March 9, 2020. The emirates created by the Ganduje administration were Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, in addition to Kano.

The decision generated controversy back then, and Governor Yusuf, in reversing it, said it was the reversal of law “that balkanised the over 1,000-year-old Kano Emirate.”

Under the new Kano Emirate Law 2024, Kano State is now under one emirate.

The former emirs are to hand over all properties in their possession to the Commissioner for Local Government who doubles as the State Deputy Governor.
