The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has hosts a high-level Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment in Kano.
The event brought together key political figures, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to discuss strengthening Nigeria’s democratic framework through inclusive reform.
The Kano state government also emphasised the importance of inclusive reform, engaging with various stakeholders, including civil society organisations, traditional leaders, youth groups, and women’s associations, to ensure that the proposed amendments reflect the collective desire for a more just, inclusive, and progressive Nigeria
Key Proposals from the Dialogue
Kano State Government says it has submitted a proposal for the creation of state police, which would grant more autonomy to states in maintaining law and order.
Adding that, the proposal also suggests institutionalising Independence Day (October 1) as the official swearing-in date for elected office holders.
It also says that, the government is pushing for full autonomy for local governments, allowing them to manage their finances and development projects without interference from state governments.
The state government is advocates for a review of the national revenue allocation formula to ensure fair distribution of resources among states.
Seeking to strengthen traditional institutions, recognising their importance in maintaining cultural heritage and promoting stability.
The government is pushing for comprehensive electoral reforms to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.
Also to enhance women’s representation in legislative bodies, promoting gender equality and inclusivity.
The dialogue, which attracted prominent stakeholders including the former Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and other top legislators, aimed to provide a platform for participants to share regional perspectives and propose amendments that align with the aspirations of Kano citizens.
Also on her part, Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and Executive Chairperson of Tudunwada Local Government, Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Abdullahi Maijama’a, reiterated her support for the inclusive approach.
Sa’adatu, emphasised the crucial role local governments must play in shaping governance and reform.
However, the focus of the dialogue was to make the constitutional review process more participatory and reflective of grassroots concerns.
