Residents of Kogi State in North-Central Nigeria have lauded the state government’s decisive efforts to bridge infrastructure gaps and promote rural development.

Their commendation follows Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s recent launch of a landmark rural electrification project, which provided 30 units of 500kVA transformers to 30 rural communities across the state.

The initiative, which spans the three senatorial districts, aims to boost access to electricity, enhance local productivity, and improve the overall quality of life in rural areas.

Commenting on the project, the Convener of the EmmyMon Supports Group for Ododo 2027, Mr Emmanuel Olorunmonu, said the effort goes beyond lighting homes to “powering lives, economies, and futures.”

“Where there is electricity, there is opportunity. We are bringing development directly to the people,” Governor Ododo affirmed during the launch.

For decades, many rural communities in Kogi State have remained on the margins of development, constrained by erratic power supply or total darkness.

However, with the installation of high-capacity 500kVA transformers across 30 communities, Mr Emmanuel Olorunmonu said those days are now numbered.

Each transformer is a beacon of hope — energising schools, health centres, markets, and homes, and laying the foundation for sustainable rural transformation,” he stated.

The project is expected to unlock local economic potential by enabling small businesses to operate more efficiently, attracting investment into agro-processing and cottage industries, and reducing rural–urban migration by making villages more liveable and economically viable.

Our farmers can now store their produce, welders can operate equipment, and traders can preserve goods — all thanks to stable electricity,” he said.

Mr Olorunmonu further noted that access to electricity would be a game-changer for social services.

“Health centres can now refrigerate vaccines, power diagnostic tools, and operate safely at night. Schools can introduce digital learning, extend class hours, and improve student outcomes. Women and children will benefit the most, as electrification reduces reliance on unsafe lighting and fuel,” he explained.

He added that with this bold electrification initiative, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is not merely installing transformers but transforming lives and realities across rural Kogi
