Adequate Care For The Earth Prolong Healthy living -Commisioner

The Kwara State Government North Central Nigeria says adequate care for the earth will prolong a healthy living for the citizenry.

Commissioner for Environment, Remilekun Banigbe gave this indication at the celebration of the 2022 World Environment Day in Ilorin, the State Capital.

In a release issued by the Press Secretary of the Ministry, Okanlawon Taiwo,  the Commissioner reiterated that the human’s future survival is plagued as a result of the collective action and inactions of human which endanger the only planet of existence.

The theme of this year’s celebration is tagged: ‘Only One Earth’ is germane to the present time when human are being disconnected from nature than ever before and the prevailing increase in the negativity of climate impacts yearly.

The Commissioner said that the new development and technology are meant to cater for the needs of growing global population, which is gradually eroding the natural capital, adding that the volume of accompanying waste being generated is portending danger to humanity.

According to her, the UNFAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) 2013 report said about 10 Million hectares of forest are globally lost every year, and over 1 Billion people depend directly on forest for food, shelter, energy, medicines and income.

She, however, enumerated the needed panacea to reverse the negative trends, which according to her, are individual positive attitudinal changes towards the environment, cross cutting policy reformation, harmonized actions targeted at proper waste management, adherence to environmental laws and regulations, and gender/social inclusion, among others.

Banigbe commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support in making the State keep to the pace of global environmental standard.

“The governor has been proactively involved in programmes that improve the capacity of Kwarans for climate adaptations- ACReSAL, NG-CARES and other partnering with non-state actors in tree planting and environmental preservations in the state,” she disclosed.

Banigbe admonished the populace to always remember that there is only one earth, only one life and one individual, adding that everyone should take ownership of the planet earth for individual benefit.
