The Lagos State Government (LASG), on Tuesday, unveiled new ambassadors to champion environmental sustainability and advocacy across the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, made this known in a statement in Lagos state, Southwest Nigeria.
The statement was issued and signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Kunle Adeshina.
Wahab made the endorsement while receiving the top five winners of the Lagos Has Talent competition, climate edition.
He said that their efforts would play a crucial role in achieving a sustainable environment through educational advocacy.
Wahab, who recalled that the journey of Lagos Has Talent began in 2023, said it was driven by the vision to amplify young voices in the climate space.
“This gained significant visibility in February 2024 with the unveiling of social media personality Maryam Apaokagi, popularly known as Taooma, as the Youth Influencer for the Climate Youth Engagement,” he said.
He said the ambassadors’ awareness and sensitisation would focus on educating, instilling positive attitudinal change, and implementing sustainable practices among the public.
“This will be especially focused on the youth, on ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change and the adoption of proper waste disposal.
“We are thrilled to have these passionate individuals join our environment team.
“I am sure your various campaigns through poetry, artwork, musical presentations, fashion accessories production, and short film presentations will help to create a more sustainable future for the state and generations to come,” he said.
He listed the names of the ambassadors alongside their various presentations as Mr. Jesutomiwa Giwa (artwork), Miss Ayomide Amusa (production of fashion accessories), and Miss Anita Nwokoji (spoken word poetry).
“Others are Miss Tiwalade Aderemi (short film presentation) and Mr. Adebayo Kolawole (musical presentation),” he said.
He said that the competition would not be a one-off event where the participants would simply receive cash gifts, plaques, and certificates.
“They would be decorated as ambassadors to collaborate with the ministry’s public affairs team in order to channel their efforts toward achieving the set environmental goals,” Wahab said.
He urged everyone to support the new ambassadors and embrace more environmentally sustainable lifestyles.
