The streets of Lagos Island erupted in a riot of colour and sound as residents and international tourists gathered to celebrate the 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival.

The historic event showcased the city’s rich heritage through pulsating drumbeats, dazzling costumes, and high-energy performances.

Cultural Heritage on Display

The parade featured six iconic Lagos Island communities: Lafiaji, Epetedo, Okepopo, Oko-Faji, and the Brazilian Campos Carreta. Each group donned elaborate outfits reflecting the cultural richness of their neighborhoods.

The Lagos Fanti Carnival remains one of the oldest traditions on the Island, rooted in the legacy of Afro-Brazilian returnees—formerly enslaved Africans who returned from Brazil in the late 1800s. Today, the festival stands as a symbol of unity, resilience, and the state’s unique artistic identity.

Superstar Performances

The excitement reached a fever pitch as some of Nigeria’s biggest musical talents took the stage.

Artists including Teni, Niniola, and 9ice brought their “A-game,” performing hit songs that kept the massive crowd dancing throughout the festivities.

Global Attraction

The carnival continues to grow as a major draw for international visitors.

Julie and Vanoni, tourists visiting from France for the first time, expressed their awe at the scale of the celebration.

“This experience is amazing because we don’t have a carnival like this back home,” they said.

“It is so beautiful and colorful. Nigerians are incredibly welcoming.”

First-time attendee Seema Rosemary echoed the sentiment, describing the atmosphere as “amazing and exciting.”

Tourism as an Economic Engine

Speaking earlier at a press conference ahead of the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, emphasised that the carnival’s value extends far beyond state revenue.

“Tourism is about enhancing and building local communities,”.

“It’s boosting SMEs—the man selling roasted plantains, the woman selling soft drinks, and the ice cream vendors. It supports the artisans making these intricate costumes. It brings a wealth of commerce directly to the streets,” Benson-Awoyinka stated.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The 2026 celebration was graced by high-ranking officials, including, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka (Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture)

Various community leaders and prominent stakeholders. The presence of state leadership underscored the government’s commitment to preserving the unique cultural displays that define the Lagosian spirit.
