The House of Representatives has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to without further delay begin the review process of constituency delineation as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.

This followed the adoption of a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance, by the minority leader, Ndudi Elumelu during plenary in Abuja.

Elumelu who decried that INEC has not done any review of constituencies in the last 22 years of the current democratic dispensation, described it as a violation of the Constitution.

Addressing National Assembly Correspondents after the plenary, the Minority Leader stated that some federal constituencies are twice the size of others in both size and population, which is at variance with the dictates of the 1999 constitution.

Mr. Elumelu stated that “this error needs to be corrected to ensure transparency in the electoral system.

The fact that this provision has not been adhered to in accordance with the law and is unfortunate.”

He also dismissed insinuations that the review process of constituency delineation will lead to the creation of additional constituencies across the country.

The House then mandated its committee on electoral matters to interface with the leadership of INEC and report to the House in six weeks’ time.
