Liverpool have signed Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai from German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig on a five-year contract subject to a work permit, the Premier League club announced on Sunday.

The Hungarian scored 20 goals and provided 22 assists in 91 games for RB Leipzig after more than 2 years in Germany. He helped Leipzig win back-to-back German cup titles and was instrumental in last season’s final as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in early June.

“The first thing for me to say is welcome to Liverpool, Dominik. I know how excited he is to be here with us, so it is important that he understands that we are all just as excited to have him,” Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp said on the club’s website.

“We already have a little knowledge of Dominik as an opponent because we had a couple of really tough games against Red Bull Salzburg when he was a player there and I think everyone who saw those fixtures will have realised that even at that stage he was a really interesting prospect.”

“I’m pretty sure he was still a teenager at that time and since then he has made some big strides – moving to Leipzig, doing really, really well in the Bundesliga, playing for the Hungary national team and then becoming captain of his national team at an incredibly young age,” he added.

Szoboszlai will become Liverpool’s second signing of the summer after the arrival of Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion.

At international level, he has 32 caps and seven goals for Hungary having made his debut in March 2019 against Slovakia.

Szoboszlai was elected as captain of his country in November 2022, voted for by his teammates and coach Marco Rossi.
