Labour Party governorship candidate in Anambra State, George Moghalu, has expressed profound condolences to Mrs. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi, Woman Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), following the brutal murder of her only son, Martin Ifesinachi Onyekesi.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Onyebuchi Okoye, Moghalu condemned the killing as “cruel, senseless, and deeply heartbreaking.”

He described Martin, a promising young fish farmer in his twenties, as a vibrant and industrious individual whose life was tragically cut short after being abducted from his family home in Awka on the evening of July 27, 2025.

Eyewitnesses reported that Martin was shot in the leg before being taken away by gunmen. Despite a ransom being paid, his lifeless body was later recovered, igniting widespread public outrage and renewed concerns over the worsening insecurity in the state capital.

Moghalu lamented that the tragedy was not only a personal loss for the Onyekesi family but also a stark reflection of the deepening crisis of insecurity in Anambra State.

He sharply criticised the Soludo-led administration for its “continued silence” amid mounting tragedies, including a recent fatal accident in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, which claimed over ten lives but elicited no official response from the government.

“While families are left to bury their dead in pain, the government is preoccupied with renaming streets and staging political endorsement rallies. This is not leadership,” Moghalu stated.

Urging the people of Anambra to rise above partisan politics, he emphasised,

“This is not about political affiliation; it is about human life. We must have empathy. We must protect our people.”

He further stressed that the future of Anambra must be built on compassion, courage, and leadership that listens and responds to the people’s cries rather than “fanfare and indifference.”

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command, through Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the recovery of the victim’s vehicle, which was used by the assailants during their escape. Police Commissioner CP Ikioye Orutugu has directed all tactical and intelligence units to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.

“The criminal elements behind this cowardly act will be brought to book,” the Police Commissioner assured, adding that the force owes it to the victim’s family, the people of Anambra, and the memory of Martin Onyekesi to ensure justice is served.

Further updates will be communicated as investigations progress, SP Ikenga noted.
