The Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in Anambra State, Chief George Moghalu, has called on Nigerians, especially the people of Anambra State to reflect deeply on the state of democracy and rise to the challenge of building a more accountable and responsive government.
In his Democracy Day message, Chief Moghalu paid tribute to Nigeria’s democratic heroes, highlighting June 12 as a lasting symbol of the nation’s struggle for justice, freedom, and self-determination.
“Today, as we commemorate Democracy Day, we honor the courage of our heroes who stood against oppression and demanded a government truly rooted in the will of the people,” he said. “June 12 remains a powerful symbol of our collective struggle for justice, accountability, and the right to determine our own destiny.”
He noted that while progress has been made, significant gaps remain—particularly in Anambra State. He lamented the persistent absence of basic infrastructure, security, quality healthcare, and economic opportunity, warning that for many citizens, democracy still feels like an unfulfilled promise.
“Governance has too often been reduced to rhetoric rather than results,” Chief Moghalu stated. “This is not the democracy our heroes fought for. Democracy is not just about casting votes, it is about leadership that listens, responds, and delivers.”
Offering himself as a “servant-leader,” Chief Moghalu emphasised the need for visionary, compassionate governance grounded in integrity and service, not self-interest.
“Anambra needs more than promises,” he said. “It needs leadership that prioritizes the people leadership with a clear plan, proven capacity, and a heart for service.”
He called on the electorate to rise above “the politics of personality” and embrace “the politics of purpose” ahead of the next election cycle. Urging citizens to participate actively in shaping the state’s future, he extended a unifying message to all Anambra state indigenes young and old, at home and in the diaspora.
“Let this Democracy Day awaken our collective will to act,” he urged. “Anambra is our home. It deserves better. Let us build it together.”
Chief Moghalu concluded with prayers for peace, wisdom, and strength for all Nigerians, and reaffirmed his commitment to a future of inclusive and transformative governance.
