Make Agriculture Attractive Through Human-Oriented Programmes, Policies – stakeholders

Stakeholders in Enugu State have urged governments at all levels to make agriculture attractive through human-oriented programmes and policies to provide employment for the youths and curb criminal activities.

Specifically, Native of Adogbalato community in Awgu Council of the state said there was the need for increased efforts towards encouraging farmers to aggressively produce food.

They noted that the agriculture sector has the capacity to change the security situation in the country, adding that it can check youth restiveness, by keeping the jobless youths busy, “an idle mind, they say, is the devil’s workshop.” If properly funded, the needed enabling environment created, the agriculture sector can address the issue of food shortage in the country,” the stakeholders pointed out.

Speaking at the 2022 Adogbalato new yam festival celebration at the Orie Awgu market square, the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Christopher Oti, explained that as the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy, there was need for the government to accord “the all-important sector” (agriculture) the attention it deserves in the interest of the country.

According to the monarch, agriculture remains one of the key sectors that drive the economies of many nations, urging political leaders to place it among their priority areas when making yearly budgetary allocations.
