Malaysia is preparing to become the first Southeast Asian nation to build and operate its own rocket launch pad, with three locations shortlisted in Pahang, Sarawak, and Sabah.

Officials disclosed that the facility is expected to be operational by 2029, aligning with the National Space Policy 2030 and strengthening Malaysia’s position as a regional hub in the fast-growing space sector.

The initiative could contribute more than 2.37 billion dollars to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, underlining the potential of space technologies to drive innovation, investment, and long-term development.

In addition to the rocket pad, the long-term vision includes developing Malaysia’s own earth observation satellite, creating a dedicated “space city,” and offering launch services to domestic and international clients.

Construction is planned to begin in early 2029, following the completion of all regulatory approvals and groundwork.
