Motherhood is one of the most profound and beautiful experiences in a woman’s life. Sokoto State marked the Safe Motherhood Day on April 11. The Chief Medical Director (CMD) Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital Sokoto, Dr Hadiza Tori, mentioned that the rates of maternal mortality recorded in the hospital have reduced drastically by about 70%.

Dr Hadiza Tori stated this while interacting with journalists as part of activity marking 2025 Safe Motherhood Day in Sokoto State.

This day advocates for improved maternal health services and aims to address the social, economic, and cultural barriers that impact maternal well-being.

The CMD, who spoke through the Chief Matron of the hospital, Hannatu Umar, said the hospital provides excellent care for pregnant women during antenatal check-ups and post natal. Regular check-ups during pregnancy are essential to monitor the health of both mother and baby.

The hospital focuses on the health of both mothers and newborns. Parents must have access to accurate information about reproductive health and related services.

” We educate women on the importance of family planning: pregnancy should be planned.

“Our aim is to reduce the risk of complications during childbirth and promote overall maternal health.”

“We conduct antenatal check-ups for pregnant women every Wednesday for new patients.”

“We attend to about 100 to 150 pregnant women weekly for Antenatal Care,” She said.

The CMD further commended the state government and other donor agencies for providing free essential products for effective service delivery.

Dr Hadiza Tori applauded TCI/Devcom for proper support to family planning activities in Sokoto State.
