Frenchman Kylian Mbappé stole the headlines on the final night of knockout phase play-off action, scoring a sensational hat-trick to take Real Madrid through to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 at Manchester City’s expense, in their thriller at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, Spain.

Mbappé met defender Raúl Asencio’s long pass with a first-time lob for the fourth-minute opener.For his second, the Frenchman showed class as his dazzling trickery swept aside defender Josko Gvardiol to fire home.

The host kept pilling on the pressure and were rewarded when Real Madrid forward completed his treble, scoring with a low curler in the 61st minute to silence the Manchester City fans at the stadium.

Manchester City midfielder Nico González slotted in an added-time goal to console a stunned Manchester City side as Real Madrid advanced.

It was Real Madrid and Manchester City’s fifth clash in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase in six seasons and the second consecutive year that Carlo Anchelotti’s men eliminated Pep Guardiola’s team.

“It was a perfect night,” Mbappe said. “It’s only logical that Real Madrid advance to the last 16 of the Champions League.”

“We are very strong at home and it’s great to give joy to our fans.”

Real Madrid will either face Bayer Leverkusen or city rival Atletico Madrid, depending on Friday’s draw as they seek a record-extending 16th title.
