The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on the police to leverage technology and communication to enhance their performance and foster peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
Speaking at the Annual Police PROs Conference in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, on Wednesday, the minister said that technology has emerged as a powerful ally in the quest for effective policing in the 21st century.
Leveraging Technology and Communication
The Information Minister praised the police for their efforts and sacrifices in maintaining law and order, especially amid security challenges and the covid-19 pandemic. But he also urged them to embrace social media, mobile applications, and other digital platforms to engage with the public and disseminate information in real time.

But he also urged them to embrace social media, mobile applications, and other digital platforms to engage with the public and disseminate information in real time.
Such platforms, he said, can help the police gain insights into the needs and concerns of the communities they serve, and build trust and confidence among them. He also stressed the importance of adopting best practices and strategies in communication, such as transparency, accountability, responsiveness, and empathy.
The minister said that the theme of the conference, “Enhanced Strategic Communication as the Panacea for Effective Policing and Peaceful Coexistence in Nigeria”, reflects the role that communication plays in securing a nation as diverse and dynamic as Nigeria.
He described communication as “the bridge that connects us, the compass that guides us and the key to unlocking the full potential of a secure and harmonious society”.
Government and Public Support
Mohammed Idris assured the police of the government’s support and commitment to providing them with the necessary resources and enabling environment to perform their duties effectively and efficiently.
He also appealed to the media and the public to support and cooperate with the police, saying that security is a collective responsibility that requires the collaboration and partnership of all stakeholders.
The Annual Police PROs Conference is a platform for the Nigerian Police public relations officers from across the country to share experiences, exchange ideas, and learn from experts on how to improve their communication skills and strategies.
