Minor Protection Failures: Brazilian Consumer Rights Group sues Meta, others
Brazilian Consumer Rights Group has sued TikTok, Kwai, and Meta Platforms for $525 Million Over Minor Protection Failures in the Use of social media platforms.
Brazil’s focus on social media regulation is intensifying, especially following a high-profile clash between Elon Musk’s platform, X, and Brazil’s Supreme Court, which resulted in significant fines.
The lawsuits demand that TikTok, Kwai, and Meta implement stronger data protection measures and warning systems to address the risks to minors’ mental health caused by social media addiction. These cases arise from research showing the negative impact of unsupervised platform use by children and teenagers.

Plaintiff lawyer Lillian Salgado noted that “measures must be adopted to change how algorithms function, manage data for under-18s, and supervise teenage users, ensuring a safer experience… as in developed countries.”
In response, Meta emphasised its commitment to providing safe experiences for young users, highlighting a new “Teen Account” feature coming soon to Brazil.
TikTok has yet to receive notice of the lawsuit, while Kwai stated it prioritises user safety, especially for minors.
