Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has revealed that his players persuaded him to accept a pay cut and remain in charge of the team.

The 63-year-old Portuguese coach agreed to a reduction in his salary this summer so that he could continue as Super Eagles boss.

Peseiro said his players begged him to stay on so that they could win the tournament.

The former Real Madrid assistant coach said the desire to win the Africa Cup of Nations next year in Cote d’Ivoire was the main reason behind his decision.

The players pushed me to stay because they believe we can win (the AFCON),” Peseiro told Sky Sports.

We can win it. The players know it. They come with the same energy, the same belief, to fight for the Super Eagles.”

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group A with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria beat Mozambique 3-2 on Monday in a friendly encounter to end a 4-year jinx of not winning a friendly match.
