The Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association, NAOWA has donated food items and cooking oil to 212 widows who lost their husbands as a result of insurgency and other occurrences while in active service.
President of the Association and wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Mrs. Salamatu Yahaya, made the donations on behalf of members in Sokoto State.
She also extended the same gesture to Lugga-Tsara community behind giginya barracks and Nigeria Army Soldier’s Wives Association in the barracks.
She expressed happiness to have the opportunity to be able to reach out to widows and the less privileged.
” The motto of NAOWA is unity and charity, so part of what we are doing is to reach out to widows and less privilege in the societies and this what we have done and I feel very delighted,” Mrs Yahaya said.
Mrs. Yahaya assured the widows that with the leadership of Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General, Faruk Yahaya, the gesture would be sustained because he would continue to support their plight and the cost for the less privileged.
In a related development, She reiterated the Associations’ commitments to the provision of quality and affordable education for children of Army personnel.
The NAOWA National President also made the assertion while laying the foundation for the construction of six blocks of classrooms and two staff rooms at the Nursery and Primary school of the Association in the barracks.
Mrs. Yahaya said the project was a long-awaited one, considering the need for expansion of the school facility and the increasing population of students.
” This is to complement the Command Children and Secondary Schools established by the Nigeria Army.
” I am proud to say that currently, NAOWA has schools in almost all the Divisions and Brigades besides the skills acquisition centres.
” I am confident to say that the academics performances of students of these schools are highly commendable as evident in their external examination results,” She added.
She appreciated the Chairperson, NAOWA 8 Division Chapter in Sokoto, Mrs. Glory Bassey, for her commitments within the shortest period she assumed office.
The NAOWA President thanked the Commanders, Principal Officers and men of the 8 Division, Nigeria Army for their support to the Association at all times.
” I want to assure you that whatever you do for us, you are doing it for humanity as we are a charity organisation with the aim to support humanity,” She said.
Also in her remarks, the NAOWA Chairperson in Sokoto, Mrs. Glory Bassey, commended the National President for her giant steps towards sustaining the tempo of infrastructural development in the barracks community where challenges of the infrastructure needed more attention.
” I am optimistic that your steps symbolise good omen, we are glad to have functional Secretariats and vocational centres that will drive the basic needs of the barracks community,” She said.
