Nasarawa: Lawmakers to check Parastatals’ budget performance

The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Balarabe Abdullahi, has advised the House standing committees to do a thorough job during the six-week oversight function to check the 2023 budget performance of Parastatals; Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The Speaker gave the advice during the House proceedings in Lafia, the state capital.

Abdullahi who declared that the House will commence a six-week oversight function beginning on Tuesday, October 17 advised the lawmakers not to compromise while carrying out oversight functions to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

According to him, we cannot sit down to fold our hands to watch things going wrongly

“This House appropriated funds for MDAs. We have the constitutional responsibility to find out whether the money released to MDAs is used appropriately or justifiable.

“As very soon, His Excellency, Gov. Abdullahi Sule will place before this House the 2024 budget. It is pertinent for us to know the performance of 2023 budget 

“The House from tomorrow will commence oversight function for six weeks,” he said.

Abdullahi said that the oversight function was not to witch-hunt anybody but to ensure that the right things were done for the overall development of the State.

He urged the management and staff of MDAs to give their necessary support and cooperation to the various House standing committees to enable them to succeed.

The Speaker urged the committees to be up and doing in carrying out the oversight function.

“You must not only check records but you must go to the sites as the state government awards roads contracts across the State.

“Education for instance, you must visit our primary and secondary schools as we will not do good to the system if we do not correct abnormalities,” he said.

The Speaker also urged the committees to maintain the reputation of the House by ensuring that they do the right things during the oversight function.

He expressed optimism about the ability and capacity of the committees to deliver on their jobs.

In a related development, the House has adopted the 24 House standing Committees in which the motion was moved by Mohammed Omadefu, the Majority Leader and seconded by Luka Zhekaba, the Minority Leader.

The Speaker named the House Rules and Business Committee to be chaired by Daniel Ogazi, Judiciary Committee Chairman is Esson Mairiga, Women Affairs is to be Chaired by Hajara Ibrahim.

Public complaints and Petition is to be Chaired by Luka Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House while, Mr Danladi Jatau, the Deputy Majority Leader is to head the committee on Education.

Mohammed Isimbabi is to chair Youth and Sports while Housing and Environment is to be chaired by Mohammed Omadefu, the Majority Leader of the House.

Similarly, SDGs is to be chaired by Hon Onarigu Onah Kana, the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs is to be chaired by Hon. Musa Abubakar Ibrahim NASIEC is to be headed by Hon. Jacob Kudu.

Others are, the Committee on Works and Transport is to be chaired by Suleiman Azara, the Information Committee is to be chaired by John Ali, Finance and Appropriation is to be chaired by Hudu A Hudu

The Chairman, the House Committee on Lands is Emmanuel Manding, Solomon Akwashiki is to chair the committee on Public Account, Health Committee is to be chaired by Mr Larry Bawa, NUDB is to be chaired by Musa Gude.

Furthermore, the Agriculture Committee is to be chaired by Dr Peter Akwe, Ovey John is to chair Water Resources while Capital Market, Commerce and Industry is to be chaired by Mohammed Onyaki.

The House Welfare Committee chairman is Aliyu Chunbaya, the committee on Pilgrims is to be chaired by Ibrahim Aliyu-Nana, Projects Monitoring is to be headed by the Deputy Speaker, Abel Bala while Selection and Appointments is to be chaired by Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House.
