The leaders and stakeholders of the Labour Party (LP) in Nasarawa State have insisted that the party remains united, with the common goal of clinching victory at both the state and national levels in the 2027 general elections.
This followed rumours about the alleged emergence of an interim management committee of the party in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the leaders and stakeholders shortly after the State Executive Council meeting of the party held in Lafia, the state capital, the chairman of the party, Alexander Ombugu, described the speculations as untrue, stating that the current executives are the only ones recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
While noting that some members saw information about the alleged emergence of an interim management committee on social media, Ombugu dismissed the rumour, insisting that it was fabricated by those who do not mean well for the party.
He therefore called on members of the party to remain calm and avoid any negative actions that could create acrimony among supporters in the state.
While stressing that the LP remains a formidable party in the country, Ombugu encouraged supporters not to allow the internal crisis at the national level to discourage them from working towards the party’s victory in 2027.
He said, “Despite the challenges, I am confident that the LP is going to come out victoriously during the forthcoming elections both at the state and federal levels.
“I want to assure all the residents that the structure of the Labour Party remains intact both at the national level and across the states of the federation. There is no interim management anywhere.
“The residents of Nasarawa State are aware that the party recently conducted its congresses, and elected new executive members who are expected to pilot its affairs for a period of four years.
“The congresses were done through a consensus arrangement and the following persons emerged; Alexander Ombugu as Chairman; Bulus Sakks as Secretary; Esther Arishi as Treasurer; Isiaka Okpu as Financial Secretary; Ablaku Anthony as Public Relations Officer; Emmanuel Ayaka as Auditor; Hanatu Giwa as Women Leader, among others.
“The party’s congresses were fully monitored by INEC. The Acting Head of the department of Election and Political Party Monitoring of INEC in the state, Mohammed Hamza, was on ground to monitor the processes and he was satisfied with how the elections were conducted. So, how did the interim management emerge? The residents should be able to ask this question.”
Ombugu, therefore alerted the relevant authorities, including the security agencies to take note of these set of persons trying to cause confusion and disunity in the party, insisting that such persons should be arrested and prosecuted in order to serve as a deterrent to others.
Continuous Voters Registration exercise
Some critical stakeholders of the party, Jones Shammah, Francis Alaku and Iyimoga Daniel said they have been working tirelessly in their various communities to ensure unity amongst the party members and supporters following the release of time table for the next general elections by INEC.
They also called on residents across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state to participate actively in the ongoing INEC’s Continuous Voters Registration exercise to enable the electorates vote leaders that would bring about the desired development in the state.
The meeting was attended by officials of the party across the 13 LGAs of the state including aspirants vying for various political positions under the LP’s platform in 2027.
