The Nasarawa State Scholarship Board has commenced the disbursement of bursary allowance to over eight thousand indigent students with verve cards in tertiary institutions across Nigeria
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Mrs Sa’adatu Yahya stated this during a press conference in Lafia the state capital.
She explained that the 2020/2021 disbursement was to enable transparency and accountability
Yahya disclosed that the board had cleared the backlog of the bursary allowance since 2016, amounting to a whopping sum of N195m covering the period 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.
“The present administration, under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule, has continued to accord education topmost priority, considering the pivotal role the sector plays in the upliftment of the standard of living of the citizens.“
She said that Governor’s love for education has committed enormous resources in the form of scholarships and bursaries, towards ensuring that children of the state from less privileged backgrounds further their education.
“As part of the concerted effort by the state government, to make education accessible to its citizens, the Governor sponsored indigenes of the state to study courses that are particularly relevant to the state, such as medicine, nursing, and engineering outside the country.“
The Executive Secretary further added that the Governor has also approved the upward review of the scholarship grant of Nasarawa State students in the Nigeria Law School from one hundred thousand naira to three hundred thousand naira.
“And other undergraduates, from ten thousand naira to twenty thousand naira only as well as the disabled from twenty thousand to thirty thousand naira only,” she added.
