A group of media and development professionals has launched Pitron TV in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, to promote advocacy, civic education, and policy literacy.
The station aims to bridge the gap between citizens and governance through data-driven, solution-oriented, and impactful storytelling that empowers people to understand and engage with public policies.
The station’s Legal Adviser Ms Mobisola Odimegwu, said that the name Pitron” was derived from the idea of “finding solutions,” symbolising the channel’s commitment to driving transformative action through informed advocacy.
Odimegwu said; “Pitron means solution. It is not just a TV station but an advocacy vehicle, a bridge between information and action, between awareness and transformation. Our work is to simplify governance and help people understand how policies impact their daily lives.”
She explained that Pitron TV aims to operate both online and as a syndicated broadcast channel, reaching audiences across Nigeria and globally through strategic partnerships with development organisations and civic networks.
“Our core vision is to inform, educate, and provide transformative insights that amplify truth and mobilise citizens toward action. We want to bridge the information gap that keeps citizens alienated from governance. The truth is that people often want to act but lack the right knowledge,” she said.
Odimegwu explained that advocacy through the media was not about confrontation but about constructive engagement.
She also said that Pitron TV would highlight successful projects and individuals creating positive change in their communities, showing that development is possible when citizens and leaders work collaboratively.
“We are telling stories that heal, not just those that hurt. We will focus on solutions, collaboration, and action, using media as a tool for transformation, locally, nationally, and globally,” she said.
Odimegwu also noted that Pitron TV would address issues that transcend borders, including migration, public health, and education, by promoting solidarity between African and global communities.
“We are about building bridges between nations and organisations. From Nigeria to the diaspora, from Africa to the world, we want to build networks that share ideas and solutions,” she said.
On his part, an International Development Consultant, Mr. Mike Eboh, said that the Media in Nigeria need to help the government in promoting policies.
“Policy development starts from information. The media should not wait until policies are implemented. They must be part of the process from conception to evaluation. Without data and effective public enlightenment, even the best-designed policies will fail,” he said.
He commended Pitron TV for aligning its objectives with advocacy-driven information dissemination.
According to him, journalists should prioritise human-interest and development stories that focus on real people rather than elite politics.
“The media must go back to the grassroots People in the markets, farms, and rural communities are the ones affected most by policies. When they are uninformed, misinformation spreads, and good initiatives suffer. That’s why platforms like Pitron are important, they close the gap.” Mr. Eboh said.
He also challenged Journalists to see their work as a public service and to partner with advocacy platforms to ensure that the impact of government programmes is measured not only by funds disbursed but by lives improved.
Similarly, a broadcaster Mr. Segun Adebowale described the station as the birth of a global advocacy and policy literacy platform designed to enlighten, inform, and mobilise people for collective action and accountability.
He said that the TV is coming with a commitment to deepen civic engagement, promote policy literacy, and bridge the gap between citizens and government through data-driven and solution-oriented storytelling.
“Pitron is conceived as an advocacy and policy literacy channel that would go beyond conventional reporting by translating complex government policies and social issues into content that ordinary citizens can understand and act upon.
“Pitron TV is conceived as a global advocacy and policy literacy platform for civic awareness. We intend to decode government policies, create public understanding of their purpose, and simplify technical subjects so that citizens at all levels can engage effectively”, Mr Adebowale said.
He noted the mission of Pitron TV is to serve as a bridge between government and the governed, noting that citizens often remain unaware of how public policies affect their lives because traditional media tend to focus on politics rather than policy education.
“We believe information is power. Our role as an advocacy channel is to ensure that the public is well-informed enough to make meaningful contributions to governance.
“Pitron TV will not only air programmes but also engage communities, schools, and civic groups to drive participatory development,” he said.
He added that Pitron’s programming would cut across governance, health, education, climate, and social reform issues, highlighting real solutions and showcasing individuals or organisations achieving measurable impact at the grassroots.
The Executive Director of the Foundation for Healthcare Advancement, Policy and Innovation, Dr. Joshua Ikechukwu, commended Pitron TV for creating a media space that focuses on advocacy and evidence-based policymaking.
He said the health sector in particular would benefit from such platforms because many policy failures stemmed from lack of sustained public advocacy.
He said; “Advocacy must focus on changing laws and enforcing standards.
“Media like Pitron can drive that conversation by showing what’s possible and what’s failing.”
He called on journalists, civil society, and policymakers to collaborate in creating an ecosystem of accountability and transparency.
The Executive Director, RID, Mr. Alex Adekunle James, commended the launch as a timely intervention that would strengthen civic accountability and policy education.
He said his organisation was proud to support Pitron TV to harness media for sustainable development and social transformation.
