The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas, has pledged to advance the law reform agenda through close collaboration with Nigerian lawmakers, aiming to build confidence among Nigerians and all stakeholders.

Professor Dakas stated this on Wednesday while speaking to State House Correspondents after his inauguration as the Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reforms Commission.

The NLRC Chairman promised to work closely with the Nigerian parliament upon assumption of office to identify outdated laws and deliberately focus on reforming those he considers no longer fit for purpose.

We will work with the National Assembly at this initial stage in the context of the ongoing constitutional review exercise, and we will also be deliberate about identifying and proposing for reform some of the very obsolete laws that we have. It will interest you to know that quite a number of our laws debt back to Colonial Era, and very many of them are still on the statute books.

“Many of them are not fit for purpose, and I’m confident that, working with the National Assembly and the executive, we will advance the law reform agenda in this country in a manner that inspires confidence in Nigerians and other stakeholders.

“Yes, my commissioners and I very privileged to have the opportunity to serve our country in this exalted capacity, and I want to assure all Nigerians that the Commission will embark on innovative and strategic law reform for national transformation in a manner that rekindles and renews the hopes of Nigerians, not only in the Nigerian legal system, but also in the Nigerian state.”

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday swore in the newly appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission NLRC, Prof.Dakas and Dr Uchenna Eugene as Commissioner.

Prof Dakas is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos. He is also a former Attorney-General of Plateau State.

The Nigerian Senate on 1st of July confirmed the appointment of Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas as Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission and Dr. Uchenna Eugene Okolocha as Commissioner representing the South-South.
