NFF Dismisses Reports of Super Eagles Coach Considering Contract Termination

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has strongly denied recent speculation that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, is considering terminating his contract.

The claim originated from Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, who suggested that uncertainty surrounding Nigeria’s World Cup qualification could be a factor in Chelle’s alleged decision.

Obayiuwana had stated:

“Eric Chelle is considering terminating his contract as Super Eagles manager. Sources within the NFF say that uncertainty over his fate beyond the FIFA World Cup qualifying series has led to a dramatic change of heart. The NFF will hold a crisis meeting to address the matter.”

Super Eagles’ Qualification Struggles

Currently, Nigeria sits fourth in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with just seven points from six matches. South Africa leads the group with 13 points, followed by Rwanda and Benin Republic, who have eight points each.

With only a few matches left, the pressure is mounting on Coach Chelle to secure Nigeria’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

NFF Labels Report an April Fool’s Prank

The report, which quickly gained traction, claimed that Chelle had recently traveled to Europe to scout new players and was planning a crisis meeting with the NFF over his future.

However, speaking to pressmen, Ademola Olajire, the NFF’s Head of Communication, dismissed the claim outright, stating:

“This is an April Fool’s prank by Osasu Obayiuwana.”

With this clarification, the NFF has reassured fans that Chelle remains committed to leading the Super Eagles in their World Cup qualification campaign. The focus now shifts to ensuring the team secures the necessary points to book their spot in the global tournament.
