NGO advocates regular eye checks to prevent blindness

The Country Director, Sightsavers, Dr Sunday Isyaku has counselled the media to embark on sustained advocacy to encourage Nigerians to go for regular eye checks to prevent blindness. Isyaku made the call on Wednesday in Kano at the opening of a two day training for journalists drawn from states in the North West.

The training was to acquaint the journalists on the importance of advocacy, especially with regards to eye care. He said that eye health was very paramount to all human endeavours, as such it was necessary for people to give it prominence.

“We have been in Nigeria for over seventy years , but what we have realized is we have been missing a very key partner in the work we do, the media. That’s why we bring the media together to help us in the advocacy,” the country director said.

Isyaku added that the media has a vital role in creating awareness for regular eye checks, and showing love and attention to people living with disabilities geared towards having a peaceful society.

“We live in a society where people living with disability are completely stigmatized and we think lack of awareness was the reason behind that. So we need the media to help us in awareness creation for the benefit of all”, he said.
