NGO Launch Farm Radio Station In Nigeria

To boost Nigerian farmers’ productivity across the country, a Non-governmental Organization (NGO),has launched its Farm Radio to reach out to agriculturists in rural areas on best agronomic practices.

Speaking with stakeholders during the inauguration of the radio station in Abuja, the Director of Programmes, Farm Radio International Initiatives (FRI), Ian Pringle, said the aim was to share knowledge, amplify voices and support positive changes in the agriculture sector.

He said, “We hope to use the medium for better planting practices, safe food storage, growing healthier and more nutritious food for the benefit of Nigerians. The farm radio international will work with different radio stations in the country to support farmers and their families in getting the information they need to be more food secure.”

Also, Pringle said the development would tackle post-harvest losses in various value chains, improve nutrition, sustainably boost food security and increase the quality and variety of food produced and eaten by Nigerians.

Speaking, Founder of the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN), Hajia Salamatu Garba, said extension workers or advocacy groups would reach out to farmers through radio programmes to promote their activities.

She said, “I am glad they are here in Nigeria; it means they will relate with issues and provide solutions, for instance, the farmer/herder crisis. “We can use different means to address some of the challenges such as radio drama to create awareness and help farmers with available business opportunities.’’
