The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of media professionals and ensuring accountability for those who violate these rights.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr Tony Ojukwu, made this declaration during a media event celebrating the Commission’s 30th anniversary.

We recognise the media’s vital role not only as watchdogs of society but also as essential partners in promoting justice, equality, and human dignity. The media remains our indispensable ally,” he stated.

He also highlighted the Commission’s intention to intensify efforts in monitoring and documenting violations against journalists.

“Together, we aim to enhance safety awareness and establish rapid response mechanisms for the protection of journalists,” he added.

The President of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahaya, who was represented by the FCT Chapter Chairman of the Union, Grace Ike, noted that incidents of abuse and threats to journalists’ freedoms are increasing and urged the NHRC to collaborate with security agencies and other stakeholders to protect journalists from abuses.

“We must act to ensure that we do everything possible to protect journalists,” she said.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator commended the Executive Secretary and the entire staff of the commission for their resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to advancing human rights across the country despite numerous challenges.

The Deputy Head, EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Zissmos Vergos pledged their support for efforts at strengthening human rights across the country.

Vergos also highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing pressing issues, such as the safety of journalists and the protection of vulnerable communities.

He reiterated the EU’s readiness to provide technical assistance, share best practices, and facilitate dialogue among stakeholders to drive positive change in Nigeria’s human rights landscape.
