The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended the official recognition of 5 July as “Ijaw Day” by the City of Houston, Texas, describing it as a proud and historic moment for the Ijaw people, Bayelsa State, and Nigeria.
She said the declaration highlights the growing impact of Nigerian diaspora communities and the increasing global acknowledgment of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and contributions.
Dabiri-Erewa described the recognition as a significant milestone that aligns with NiDCOM’s mission and strengthens ties between Nigerians at home and abroad while promoting cultural identity.
“The recognition of 5 July as Ijaw Day in Houston, Texas, is both a celebration and a call to deepen diaspora engagement and collaboration,” she said.
The NiDCOM boss noted the opportunity this presents to foster stronger partnerships with state governments, especially Bayelsa State, and encourage initiatives that leverage diaspora influence for national development.
Dabiri-Erewa congratulated the Ijaw community and leadership in Houston for their dedication and advocacy, which led to the recognition.
