Niger State set to reduce Child Mortality rate

The wife of Niger state Governor In North Central Nigeria, Dr Amina Abubakar Sani Bello, has urged pregnant women on the need for regular visits to health centre for proper medical care as part of efforts to restate government’s commitment in strengthening the process of reduction in child and maternal mortality in the State.

Dr. Amina Sani Bello stated this during the flag off ceremony of Year 2022 2nd round Maternal, New born and Child Health Week/Measles Vaccination Campaign and formal Commissioning of PHC, Bosso low-cost in Minna the State Capital.

She further urged women in Bosso and neighbouring communities to always visit the new Primary Health Care Centre, to benefit from the facilities which include distribution of insecticide treated mosquito nets to pregnant women registering for the first time.

“The prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV routine immunization and supplemental measles vaccination will all be offered to our women and children free of charge. During the week all pregnant women are advised to visit the focal primary health centres in their wards to access these packages.”

The Niger State First Lady who also charged women groups, traditional and faith based organizations to always promote the benefits of safe immunization and to ensure door to door advocacy, equally called on all wives of the 25 local government chairmen in the state, to support health care services by providing supervisory and oversight functions at all levels

Dr Amina pointed out that the commissioning of the healthcare centre is a testimony that Niger State Government’s commitment to improve health issues in the state and to improve maternal and child mortality and other health issues .

“My office in collaboration with the ministry of Health and primary healthcare development agency, has initiated health programmes ranging from cervical and breast cancer screening with fistula corrective surgeries, provision of delivery kits for safe delivery, immunization outreaches and family planning services over the years.”

The Niger State Commissioner of Health and Hospital Services, Dr Muhammad Makusid, said the maternal, new born and child health week is being implemented biannually to sustain awareness on the importance of health of women and children as contained over the years to provide the opportunity for the uptake of lifesaving interventions.

The new centre according to him is equipped with an operations theatre laboratory pharmacy and other units along with the Minimum Service Package (MSP) that include essential edge girl workers to enable the place function optimally as a mobile health care centre.
