The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on Nigerians to commit themselves to unity, patriotism, and peaceful coexistence as the country marks its 65th Independence anniversary.

Speaking at the Independence Day parade in Kano, Governor Yusuf described the anniversary as both a moment of celebration and reflection on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence in 1960.

He paid glowing tribute to the nation’s founding fathers, whose sacrifices, he said, laid the foundation for the country’s unity and progress.

The Governor expressed pride in Nigeria’s achievements over the decades but stressed the need for sober reflection.

“This day is not just for celebration; it is an opportunity to honor the sacrifices of our forefathers and renew our collective resolve to build a stronger, more united, and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.

Highlighting the theme of this year’s celebration, “Nigeria at 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nigeria”, the governor emphasised that the nation’s progress depends on the commitment of both leaders and citizens.

He hailed the contributions of national heroes such as Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Malam Aminu Kano, Anthony Enahoro, Margaret Ekpo, Hajiya Gambo Sawaba, and Fela Anikulapo Kuti, noting that their courage and vision set the foundation for constitutional democracy and a united nation.

Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in their mission to safeguard lives, preserve peace, and promote prosperity.

“On this historic occasion, let us remember that the progress and unity of our nation rest on our shared values of sacrifice, tolerance, and patriotism. We must all work together to secure a brighter future for Nigeria,” he said.
