Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Mr Balarabe Lawal has called for stronger collaboration between the media and government in tackling the country’s growing environmental challenges.
The Minister made the call at the Training Workshop and interactive session for Environment reporters held in Abuja the nation’s capital with the theme: “Engaging Media Outfits on Reporting Environmental Sustainability in Nigeria.”
According to him, the Ministry remains committed to supporting the media through improved access to information, data, and field activities, by fostering an enabling environment for effective reporting.
He says the Ministry of Environment regards the media as indispensable partners and key stakeholders in reporting environmental issues, including climate change, ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resource management.
He explained that the role played in informing, educating, and raising public awareness remains invaluable and will never be taken for granted.
“The media serves as the mirror through which society understands itself, the megaphone that amplifies truth, and the bridge connecting policy to the people. Efforts in projecting the policies, programmes, plans, and activities of the Ministry are highly appreciated, and there is a strong call to sustain this momentum.
“Through your platforms, complex environmental challenges are translated into compelling narratives that inspire action and promote accountability.” He said.
He also assured participants of the Ministry’s commitment to improving access to information and strengthening partnerships with media professionals, urging all stakeholders to work together to secure a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Nigeria for future generations.
The Minister further reaffirmed the government commitment to strengthening climate resilience, and advancing inclusive and sustainable development for present and future generations.
He said Under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, and within the framework of the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Ministry of Environment has intensified efforts towards building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Nigeria.
“In 2025 alone, initiatives such as the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project and the National Agency for the Great Green Wall restored over 1.14 million hectares of degraded land and supported the planting of more than 1.5million trees across the country.” He said
According to the Minister, these achievements demonstrate a clear national commitment to securing environmental sustainability while advancing economic growth.
The Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Environment Dr Salihu Usman, says the training workshop remains vital as collective action is required to address the environmental challenges facing the country.
Represented by Director Pollution Control and Environmental Health in the Ministry Dr Bahijjatu Abubakar, said the role journalist play in informing, educating, and shaping public discourse on environmental matters cannot be overstated.
The workshop will further strengthen the relationship between the Ministry and the media, enhance your capacity for effective environmental reporting, and provide a platform for knowledge exchange.
