The Nigerian Government has commissioned a bilingual education boarding school in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, marking another step in its nationwide drive to strengthen human capital development through inclusive, skills-based learning.

The facility, known as the ISDB–UBEC Bilingual Education Boarding School, is located in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State and forms part of a broader national programme to improve access to quality basic education.

Speaking at the official commissioning, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, said sustained investment in education remains central to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformation agenda, which prioritises equipping Nigerian children with relevant skills for global competitiveness.

She explained that the rollout of bilingual model schools across the country underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to providing learners with strong linguistic, vocational, and digital competencies.

According to her, multilingual education enhances students’ ability to function effectively in diverse social and economic environments.

Professor Suwaiba added that the initiative is designed to reduce the number of out-of-school children nationwide while improving learning outcomes through modern teaching approaches.

She also urged host communities to take ownership of the schools to ensure their long-term sustainability.

The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba, said the Kiru school is one of 30 Bilingual Education Model Schools being developed across nine states of the federation, with Kano State hosting four facilities in Doguwa, Ganduje, Ungoggo, and Kiru.

She noted that the schools combine English and Arabic literacy with Technical and Vocational Education, ICT-driven learning, and secure boarding facilities.

Each school, she said, is designed to accommodate over 1,000 students and is equipped with comprehensive academic, residential, and support infrastructure.

Describing the commissioning as a reflection of the Federal Government’s resolve to guarantee access to safe, inclusive, and quality education for every Nigerian child, Aisha Garba assured that UBEC would continue to provide support in areas such as teacher deployment, school management, and monitoring.

Also speaking at the event, the Director-General of Corporate Services at the Islamic Development Bank, Dr. Mohammed Simsim, and the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim, pledged sustained collaboration to ensure effective utilisation of the facility.

They expressed confidence that the school would expand access to quality education, contribute to skills development, and support national efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Kano State and across the country.
