Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a high-level diplomatic meeting in Abuja between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther.
The discussions focused on multilateral diplomacy, economic cooperation, energy infrastructure, security collaboration, and cultural heritage preservation.
Welcoming the German delegation, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement.
“Nigeria values continuous dialogue and remains fully committed to constructive engagement with Germany on issues of mutual interest,” he stated.
“The Ministry stands ready to facilitate all necessary coordination to further strengthen this important partnership.”
Ambassador Annett Günther described the relationship between the two countries as strong and steadily advancing. She highlighted the successful Nigeria–Germany Bi-National Commission held in November 2025.
“The Bi-National Commission marked a significant milestone and reaffirmed the strategic depth of cooperation between Germany and Nigeria,” she said.

On multilateral cooperation, particularly regarding candidacies to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the German envoy expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s support.
“Germany highly appreciates Nigeria’s principled support of our candidature. We remain committed to multilateralism and to reforms that ensure greater African representation in global decision-making.”
Energy cooperation was also central to the meeting, with Germany reiterating its readiness to support Nigeria’s modernisation drive in the power sector.
“Germany remains interested in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its energy transmission and distribution infrastructure,” she affirmed.
Both sides further pledged to deepen security cooperation through capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing regional stability and addressing shared threats.
The engagement underscores the growing strategic depth of Nigeria–Germany relations, anchored on mutual respect, shared responsibilities, and a common vision for peace and inclusive global governance.
