Nigeria raises concern over Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso’s withdrawal from ECOWAS

Nigerian government has described as regrettable, the announcement by the Military authority in Niger Republic, of the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from ECOWAS.

In a statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, Nigeria reaffirmed its support for ECOWAS, stressing its belief in due process, commitment to citizens’ rights and welfare.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country remains open to engaging with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger for regional benefits and democratic values

“Nigeria stands with ECOWAS to emphasize due process and shared commitment to protect and strengthen the rights and welfare of all citizens of Member States.

“Nigeria has worked sincerely and in good faith to reach out to all members of the ECOWAS family to resolve the difficulties being faced.”

The Nigerian Government therefore called on the International Community to deepen support for ECOWAS’s vision of partnership, cooperation and integration.

The military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger had on Sunday, January 28, 2024 withdrawn from the ECOWAS “with immediate effect”.
