By Chidi Nwoke, Abuja.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria stunned co-hosts Australia 3-2 in their 2023 FIFA World Cup Group B encounter, at the Lang Park Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
Nigeria featured Ifeoma Onumonu in attack, with Uchenna Kalu and Rasheedat Ajibade supporting on the flanks. For Australia, Emily Van Egmond and Caitlin Foord started up-front.
The hosts took the lead through Egmond in first half injury time. However, Nigeria equalised moments later just before the first half whistle, courtesy of a strike by Kalu.
In the second half, the Africans took the lead through Osinachi Ohale. Substitute Asisat Oshoala then extended Nigeria’s lead in the 72nd minute. The goal silenced the fans at the Lang Park Stadium.
Deep in injury time, Australia reduced the deficit when Alanna Kennedy scored. However, Nigeria held firm to see out the match.
The match finished 3-2 in favour of Nigeria, with the Africans topping Group B on goal difference.
