The Nigerian government has announced plans to establish a special database for farmers across the country, aimed at capturing detailed information on the size and location of farms.

The initiative is designed to improve the identification and traceability of agricultural produce, making it easier to target government interventions.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari disclosed the programme while speaking in Maiduguri, Borno State Northeast Nigeria, noting that “it will be implemented in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).”

“This exercise will help us target assistance effectively and ensure that farmers benefit from our programmes,” Kyari said, stressing that the registry will help the ministry identify farmers eligible for government support.

In line with the initiative, the ministry distributed farming equipment to smallholder farmers, vulnerable groups, and farmers’ associations in Borno State. The tools and inputs are expected to reduce production costs and enhance productivity, particularly for grassroots farmers.

The project is part of the Nigerian government’s broader agenda to strengthen the agricultural sector, boost food security, and support smallholder farmers as key drivers of economic growth.

Officials emphasised that the database will also serve as a platform for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of agricultural programmes, ensuring that resources reach intended beneficiaries while enhancing transparency and efficiency within the sector.

This move reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging technology and data-driven approaches to modernise agriculture and empower farmers across Nigeria.
