Nigeria To Officially Become 80th Member Of UPOV Today

The National Agricultural Seed Council in Nigeria has disclosed that Nigeria will be officially announced as the 80th member of the International Union of the Protection of New Plant Varieties (UPOV) TODAY 27TH March 2025.

 

According to the Acting Director General of the Council, Dr. Ishiaq Khalid said becoming a UPOV member is a huge milestone for the country’s seed sector as it opens up the Nigerian seed sector to international trade.

 

“I am also pleased to announce a major milestone: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently signed the Instrument of Ascension for Nigeria’s membership in the International Union for the Protection of New Plant Varieties (UPOV). The 27th of March, 2025, Nigeria will be officially announced as the 80th member of UPOV

 

He explained that the membership has to do with issues of protection of breeders’ rights, to his varieties, noting that it protects the right of the breeder so that even when they are retired, they can still continue to do some breeding work and get some honorarium, based on the arrangements.
